are a co-founder of the club for growth. you sort of subscribe to that grover norquist idea that don't raise taxes. option number two in the scenario that i put forward, republicans end up being dared to vote against the president's plan. again, forget the politics. forget what jessica said about procedurally not getting there. the point president obama is trying to make is he wants everybody to vote one way or the other, up or down. the idea is republicans will be forced to vote one way or the other on extending the push tax cuts for people making below $250,000 a year. >> yeah. ? and by definition making taxes go up on those earning above that. would republicans be forced to vote for the president's plan to avoid being blamed for rates rising on most taxpayers and going over the fiscal cliff? >> well, a couple thing, ali. first of all, i think the outlines of that deal you just described are probably where they're headed, although i don't think that mitch mcconnell and harry reid -- i hear they're negotiating maybe a little higher income threshold, so maybe not $250,000, maybe $400

is the grover norquist pledge that the officials, mainly republicans, have taken. it should be deemed unconstitutional. no elected official should be allowed to take any kind of pledge. when boehner presented plan b, he could not even get a vote on it because it would raise taxes for the million-dollar people. this is definitely a problem. i also think that no entitlement should be part of this when it comes to the senior citizens. their social security, they do not get paid that much. >> she was mentioning the bill that the speaker had to pull because he did not have the votes, the one that would raise income over those making over $1 million per year. a news reporter from "the washington post" talked about the cliff. the minority leader has appealed to the vice president directly in a last-ditch deal to avoid a fiscal cliff. kerry reid stepped back from the talks on the senate floor. and he had yet to hear back from the. -- from them. we will show you comments in a short while ago. taking your phone calls on the fiscal cliff with two days to go, the house and senate vote in a sessio

and a lot of misinformation. harry reid is still blaming grover norquist. send him a memo that norquist took himself out of the discussion a week ago when he backed the house republican plan "b." it's like the old stale talking points. for me, the big picture if you take a step back from this, the big picture story here is one of misplaced outrage. media folks with the commentators on all sides complaining there is a lack of compromise. we need comedy in washington. everybody should come together as starbucks barristas want. the real outrage is what started as an effort to trim the size and scope of government, the push tax cuts a decade ago or whether it was the debate over the debt ceiling, just over a year ago, is going to likely end up at asen effort to expand the size and scope of government. that is something that can only happen in washington. you have people that come together to limit government and bunch of contortions and missed opportunities and bad negotiating, it becomes a de facto expansion of government. >> charles? >> well, you know, there are two events that will happen jan

the president and boehner, both times boehner could not deliver because they refused because of grover norquist to allow any taxes for revenues whatsoever. we had meetings with the vice president biden and cantor. he walked out of it. he's the majority leader in the house. we had this supercommittee and they were doing good things. good things. dealing with entitlements and revenues and a week before they were to report, by virtue of a statute, i get a letter signed by virtually every republican, too bad about the supercommittee. we're not going to do anything with revenues. >> okay. i think that's a good place to end this. what you're hearing is the history of what has happened to bring us to this point. i want to bring in our congressional correspondent dana bash. dana, i was just sitting here imagining someone turning on their tv thinking, what a these people talking about? and i think i would sort of boil it down to this. when they are talking on the floor, that's never a good sign. they should be talking in a back room. they have gotten nowhere. we are where we are and nobody has agreed on

it offends grover norquist. what role do the pledges play in our inability to compromise? >> well, i'm certain it does play a role. i've never signed these pledges because my obligation to the people who elected me and that's the way it should be for each member of congress, because times change. the circumstances change, you have to address the issue at hand. it is important to have extending the tax cuts for especially the middle income but secondly to put spending cuts on the table. we have a large debt problem and i understand as far as the republican position is concerned, so that does have credibility, and we have to come to the table on both of those issues, but i think more than anything else, what is deeply troubling is that you can't get congress and the president to reach any accord on anything. we can't even do routine business, let alone the matters that could affect the future of this country. >> olympia snowe you and what you represent will be missed in the senate. senator olympia snowe republican from maine who will not be in the next congress. >>> up ahead they're kn

allegiance to this grover norquist fellow. did they not realize that you have to have taxes to pay for these two wars that the republicans -- that was george w. bush who was in charge that time -- they started these wars. and yet, they are saying we have to control the spending. the spending is on these wars. so, let congress take a pay cut of about 35%, and take any revenue the dead and take that revenue and put it towards the debt to pay down our debt. our debt is caused by wars, not by social security, not by medicare. we people who work out here, we pay into social security. we pay into medicare. so, let them take a pay cut. if they want to start cutting everybody, how about congress taking a pay cut? thank you for taking my call. host: christian, your message to washington on this deadline day, about 9 1/2 hours before we reached the midline -- the midnight deadline. caller: i do not think we should now go over the fiscal cliff, and i do not think it is responsible whether you are republican or democrat. i think both parties should unite and work for all americans. it is not o
